Government agency data

Government agencies have a large number of population-based registers, statistical databases and data from surveys and questionnaires. Most national registers are held by the 29 statistical agencies. Statistics Sweden maintains several of these registers.

Here is a selection of government agencies whose data is often requested for research purposes. The page also contains information on how to contact these government agencies to order data and what support is available.

Swedish Work Environment Authority

The Swedish Work Environment Authority is responsible for statistics on occupational injuries and the work environment. The official occupational injury statistics are based on reported occupational injuries and recurring sample surveys, which Statistics Sweden implements on behalf of the Swedish Work Environment Authority.

Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention

The Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention is responsible for official crime statistics covering cases handled by the police, customs, prosecutors, courts and prison and probation services. Examples of this are the prosecution register and the National Security Survey (NTU).

Public Health Agency of Sweden

The Public Health Agency of Sweden works to improve public health by developing and supporting society's efforts to promote health, prevent ill health, and protect against health threats.

Swedish Social Insurance Agency

The Swedish Social Insurance Agency is responsible for official statistics in the areas of support for illness and disability and support for families with children, which are collected in the MiDAS register database (microdata for analysis of social insurance).

Swedish Unemployment Insurance Inspectorate

The Swedish Unemployment Insurance Inspectorate (IAF) is responsible for statistics on unemployment insurance funds' throughput times, membership trends, membership fees and other statistics related to unemployment insurance.

Lantmäteriet

Lantmäteriet is responsible for property division in Sweden and provides information on geography and properties.

Swedish National Mediation Office

The Swedish National Mediation Office has responsibility for Sweden's official wage statistics. This includes short-term wage statistics, wage structure statistics and the statistics reported to the European statistical agency Eurostat.

Swedish Pensions Agency

The Swedish Pensions Agency is responsible for official statistics in the subject area of social insurance and statistics on support in old age.

Swedish Defence Conscription and Assessment Agency

The Swedish Defence Conscription and Assessment Agency is responsible for, among other things, to summon, muster and enroll people to the basic military training. In connection with this, the authority collects examination data on health and interests from all 18-year-olds in Sweden.

National Archives

The National Archives manages the state's archiving activities and is responsible for archive maintenance in the country and manages archives from state authorities and other types of organisations.

Swedish Tax Agency

The Swedish Tax Agency is responsible for collecting taxes, managing the population register, registering estate inventories and acting as a creditor for the state. The agency provides data from various registers, such as the population register, income, taxation and wealth.

National Agency for Education

The National Agency for Education is responsible for official statistics in the field of education and conducts national follow-ups and evaluations.

National Board of Health and Welfare

The National Board of Health and Welfare is responsible for producing and developing statistics in areas such as healthcare, dental care, mental health and functional impairments.

The National Board of Health and Welfare is responsible for the following health data registers, among others:

• National Cancer Register
• National Prescribed Drug Register
• National Register of Interventions in Municipal Health Care
• National Dental Health Register.
